Staying fit and healthy is a mental game. So, how do you beat your cravings and stay motivated? These are my favorite tried and true “mind tricks” that keep me on the right track.
#1 Stay Positive. Okay, I know that sounds totally obvious. Hear me out. Yes, it is obvious that you should stay positive about your body image and exercising, blah blah blah. But what you might not do, is stay positive even when you eat something fattening and full of sugar, maybe pie?
You can think to yourself, “Ugh, I suck! I eat way too much and am fat.” Or you can think, “Whoa that was the most delicious piece of pie I have ever had!”
Which line of thinking is most likely to lead you to give up on all your goals and you might as well just eat two or three more pieces because you already messed up. Have you ever done that? Guilty…
Which thought will lead you to feeling satisfied??? When you are satisfied you are less likely to overeat.
If you have a positive mindset from the very beginning of the day, each meal will satisfy you that much more. Try it and see where it gets you. Think good thoughts and health and fitness will be one step easier.
#2 Drink water before every meal. So, everyone says to drink lots of water and it helps you lose weight, but have you taken it a step further? Drink an entire glass of water before you eat anything. Do you want to snack on a few chips? Drink the glass of water first then you will only have room for a few chips!
#3 Add a walk to your day. No matter what fitness level you are at or what goals you have, everyone can benefit from an extra walk. Whether it is first thing in the morning or right after lunch always make time for a walk. You will boost your mood, metabolism, and energy levels.
#4 Put your food down between bites. This is an oldie, but a goodie. Seriously, if you are having trouble controlling yourself when it comes to food then just put it down! It slows you down and gives you time to register when you are full.
#5 Keep yourself busy. If you have something to do then you can’t eat. Super simple. If you are going to a dinner party you can help set the table or cook so that your hands are busy instead of diving into appetizers. Start a game with people so that you aren’t sitting there staring at the food.
If you are alone at home and just eating because you are bored, then pick up a hobby! Start knitting, writing, walking, train your dog a new trick, or get outside. Build your talent repertoire and you will not only be skinnier, but more well rounded. Win win all around!
These are the tricks I use to stay on track. What do you think? Do you have any to add to the list?
